Family law software
Family law software for the money, the children and the court timetable.
A family matter is three cases running at once under one client name: a financial remedy, an arrangement for the children, and a procedural timetable that punishes a missed date. ModulawAI holds all three in one matter, reads the disclosure bundle so you do not have to open ninety bank statements by hand, watches the deadlines, and drafts in Word. It ships no maintained state child support guideline engine, though its Canvas artifact builder can produce a working calculator from a formula you supply, and this page is explicit about where you still need a dedicated product.
The problem
Why generic practice management struggles with a family file.
Family law is one of the largest bodies of work in the civil courts. Of roughly 66 million cases handled by US state courts each year, about 3.8 million are family matters, including 1.09 million divorces and 880,000 child support cases (Clio, Family Law Statistics). It is also structurally different from the litigation and transactional work most software is designed around, in four ways.
One client, several proceedings
A divorce or dissolution, a financial remedy and a children application run on separate timetables with separate documents, but they share one client, one set of facts and one fee arrangement.
Disclosure is the work
A single financial case produces hundreds of statements, payslips, valuations and pension documents, and the analysis is comparison across all of them rather than close reading of one.
Arithmetic with legal consequences
Support figures, pension apportionment and after-tax division are formula work that must follow the governing guideline exactly, and a rounding error becomes an order.
Distressed clients contact you constantly
Family clients call and email more than commercial ones, and much of that contact is a request for reassurance about progress rather than a request for advice.
The market, honestly
Three kinds of family law software, and what each is actually for.
Most firms end up with two of these three, and that is often the right answer. We build one of them, so treat the last column as an interested party and verify it yourself.
| Category | Examples | Does well | Does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calculation engines | Family Law Software, DivorceMate, Custody X Change | State or provincial support guidelines, alimony, after-tax property division, parenting time counts, court form output | Running the practice: matters, billing, documents, deadlines beyond the calculation |
| Practice management with a family module | Clio, MyCase, LEAP, Access Legal | Matters, time, billing, calendars, sometimes packaged family forms and legal aid billing | Reading and comparing a disclosure bundle; research grounded in primary law |
| AI-native platforms | ModulawAI | Bulk document analysis with citations, drafting in Word, research across eight jurisdictions, deadline agents, plus full practice management | A maintained, state-by-state child support guideline engine, which we do not ship |

The money
Financial disclosure, which is where the hours go.
Bundle review
Ask one question of ninety bank statements.
Twelve months of statements across four accounts, two pension valuations, a company’s filed accounts and a folder of payslips is a normal financial remedy bundle. The questions asked of it are always the same shape: which transfers exceed a threshold, which payments recur, what is the pattern of drawings, where did that deposit come from. Tabular review puts the documents down the rows and those questions across the columns, then fills the grid with answers that each cite the page they came from. The output exports to Excel, which is the format the schedule of assets was always going to be in. See AI contract review, which is the same grid applied to agreements.
Chasing disclosure
The list of what is still missing, maintained by itself.
Disclosure arrives in pieces over weeks, by email, in the post and through the portal. A checklist per matter tracks what was requested, what arrived and what is outstanding, and a background agent raises the gap before the hearing rather than the night before it. In England and Wales the deadline is fixed: Rule 9.14(1) of the Family Procedure Rules 2010 requires the parties to exchange and file their financial statements not less than 35 days before the first appointment (legislation.gov.uk).
The honest limit
We do not maintain child support guidelines, and you should not want us to.
US child support is guideline arithmetic that varies by state. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 41 states use the income shares model, six use percentage of income (Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, North Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin) and three use the Melson formula (Delaware, Hawaii and Montana), each with its own deviation factors and worksheets. Tools like Family Law Software maintain those formulas and their tax interactions across jurisdictions, and Custody X Change counts parenting time and feeds it into the calculation. That is specialist, high-maintenance work. A general AI platform that guessed at those numbers would be a liability, so ModulawAI ships no guideline engine and no certified worksheets.
There is a narrower thing we can do, and it is worth stating precisely because it is unusual. ModulawAI includes Canvas, an interactive artifact builder that turns a plain description into a working single page application. Describe your state’s worksheet, the income lines, the self support reserve and the deviation factors you want applied, and you get a calculator you can open and use in a few minutes. The same mechanism builds a spousal maintenance model, an equity split scenario board, a costs estimate for a client, or a one off tool for the fact pattern nobody’s software anticipated.
That is not the same product as Family Law Software or DivorceMate, and pretending otherwise would be the exact failure this section is about. The formula came from you, not from a vendor who revises it when the state does. The output carries no certification a court expects on a filed worksheet. The arithmetic is yours to check before anyone relies on it. Canvas apps also run in a sealed sandbox with no network access, which is deliberate: the app cannot reach the matter file, your firm’s data or any outside service, so you type the figures in by hand.
So the division of labour is unchanged. Keep the dedicated calculator for the number that goes on the form. Use Canvas when you need a bespoke model the maintained products do not offer, or something to put in front of a client in the room. Use ModulawAI for the matter, the bundle, the drafting and the deadlines around it.
The children
Arrangements, evidence and the welfare record.
The children strand of a family matter produces less paper than the financial strand but carries more risk, because the material is sensitive, the chronology matters and the court will ask what the arrangements are before it does anything else. In Nigeria that is explicit: under the Matrimonial Causes Rules a petitioner must set out the intended arrangements for the children, and the court will not grant a decree until it is satisfied with them.
- A chronology built from the file, not from memory. Ask the assistant to produce a dated sequence of incidents, contact changes and communications from the documents already in the matter, each entry citing its source, then correct it. That is a statement exhibit most of the way written.
- Message and email bundles read at once. A year of correspondence between parents is a document set, and the same grid that reads bank statements will extract every reference to a handover, a cancellation or an agreement, with page citations.
- Sensitive material kept behind role-based access. Safeguarding letters, medical records and children’s expressions of wishes sit in the matter with permissions by role, and every open is on the audit trail, which matters when a file is reviewed or transferred.
- Parenting plans drafted from your own precedents. Document templates generate the routine instruments from matter data, and the AI drafts from the firm’s precedent library rather than a generic form. For parenting time counts and schedule modelling, a dedicated custody scheduling tool remains the better instrument.
- Welfare framing that follows the jurisdiction. Research is grounded in the law that applies, whether that is the welfare checklist under the Children Act 1989, the best interests standard in a US state, or the welfare principle under Nigeria’s Child’s Rights Act, with every authority linked.
The timetable
Deadlines that escalate before they expire.
Agents on the caseload
The file that nobody has touched in three weeks.
Family practices carry high matter counts per fee earner, and the failure mode is not a missed hearing, it is a file that quietly stops moving. Background agents run on a schedule against every matter, flagging an unactioned deadline, a disclosure request with no response and a case with no activity, and they raise it in the matter with an owner rather than in an inbox. Approvals can be required before anything is sent. See legal workflow software and agents.
Client contact
Most update calls are a portal login that never happened.
A client in a family matter is frightened and wants to know what happens next. When they can see the stage, the next date, the documents and the invoice themselves, the volume of unbillable reassurance calls falls. That matters commercially: Clio’s 2025 Legal Trends Report puts the average realisation rate at 88%, meaning 12% of billable work never reaches a bill, and family practices lose a visible share of that to client hand-holding. See the client portal.
Fees
Fixed fees need the time data you stopped recording.
Family work has moved towards fixed fees and staged pricing faster than most practice areas, and a firm that stops recording time against fixed-fee matters loses the ability to price the next one. ModulawAI records time against fixed-fee matters as non-billable work in progress, so the profitability of each stage is visible even when the client is not billed by the hour. See legal time tracking software.
By jurisdiction
What the file looks like where you practise.
United States
Procedure, forms and support guidelines are state law, so a national tool has to be configurable rather than prescriptive. Matter types carry their own custom fields and stages, so a dissolution in California and a custody modification in Texas behave differently in the same system. Research covers federal and state primary law with linked citations. Support calculation stays with your state calculator, and the resulting figures come back into the matter as documents and schedules. See attorney case management software.
England and Wales
The financial remedy timetable drives the file. Form E, or Form E1 or E2 depending on the application, is exchanged simultaneously and filed not less than 35 days before the first appointment under FPR 9.14(1). ModulawAI holds the disclosure checklist, reads the resulting bundle, drafts in Word with OSCOLA-formatted citations, and tracks the timetable with escalation. It does not auto-complete Form E, and we would not suggest letting any tool do that unsupervised. Research is grounded in BAILII, Find Case Law and legislation.gov.uk. See legal software for UK law firms and AI for lawyers UK.
Nigeria
Statutory marriages are dissolved in the High Court of a State or of the Federal Capital Territory under the Matrimonial Causes Act, on the single ground in section 15(1) that the marriage has broken down irretrievably, proved by one of the listed facts including adultery, behaviour the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with, desertion for at least a year, and separation for two years with consent or three without. Arrangements for the children must be set out and approved before a decree issues, and custody is decided on the welfare principle under the Act and the Child’s Rights Act. ModulawAI holds Nigerian primary law with linked citations, drafts the petition and supporting processes in Word from your precedents, invoices in naira through Paystack, and runs offline through the desktop app when connectivity fails. See law firm software Nigeria and Nigerian legal research.
Using AI safely here
Family files are the worst place to trust an unverified citation.
Adoption of AI in legal practice is now the norm rather than the exception: Clio’s 2025 Legal Trends Report found 79% of legal professionals using AI tools in their work, up from 19% in 2023, and the ABA’s 2024 Legal Technology Survey put firm adoption at 30%, from 11% the year before. The sanctions record has grown with it. Damien Charlotin’s AI Hallucinations database tracked 2,041 decisions involving fabricated AI-generated content as at 14 September 2026, across more than 40 jurisdictions. The two everyone cites are Mata v Avianca, where a New York federal judge sanctioned two attorneys and their firm $5,000 in June 2023 over six invented decisions, and Ayinde v London Borough of Haringey and Al-Haroun v Qatar National Bank [2025] EWHC 1383 (Admin), where the Divisional Court dealt with five non-existent authorities and made wasted costs orders.
The regulators have been clear about where responsibility sits. ABA Formal Opinion 512, issued on 29 July 2024, requires lawyers using generative AI to satisfy their duties of competence, confidentiality, communication and reasonable fees, and says time billed must reflect time actually spent. The SRA’s warning notice on the misuse of AI, published 17 August 2026, states that solicitors remain accountable for all work and advice delivered to clients whether or not AI was used, that reliance on an AI output would not be a suitable defence, and that client information should only be entered into AI systems with appropriate contractual, technical and organisational safeguards.
What that means in product terms, and how ModulawAI is built: research retrieves the statute or judgment first and answers from the retrieved text, every citation links to its source so verification is a click, subsequent treatment is flagged, client data is encrypted in transit and at rest in AWS and never used to train models, access is role-based per matter, and every AI action is logged with the fee earner who reviewed it. That log is your supervision evidence. Read the data processing agreement and the subprocessor list before uploading a client file, and apply the same test to any other vendor.
Evaluating
A four-week test any family firm can run.
- Week one, the bundle. Take a financial disclosure bundle from a matter you have already analysed. Run your own schedule questions across it and reconcile the grid against the schedule you produced by hand. Count the discrepancies and check who was right.
- Week two, research. Pick three points you have already researched, on conduct, on pension sharing, on relocation. Open every citation the tool returns. A tool that cannot show you the judgment fails here and nothing later matters.
- Week three, drafting. Draft a statement or a parenting plan from your own precedent through the Word add-in, with track changes on, and compare the time against your last one.
- Week four, the caseload. Turn on deadline monitoring with approvals required across twenty live matters and see what it raises that the diary did not.
- Throughout, keep your calculator. Run support figures where you run them today. The question is whether everything around the calculation gets faster, not whether one tool can do everything.
FAQ
Questions, addressed.
What is family law software?
Family law software is the system a family practice uses to run divorce, financial and children matters: client and matter records, the court timetable, financial disclosure, documents and evidence, drafting, billing and client communication. The category splits three ways. Calculation engines handle support and property arithmetic under a specific jurisdiction’s guidelines. Practice management systems run the caseload. AI-native platforms like ModulawAI add bulk document analysis, grounded research and drafting on top of practice management. Most firms combine a calculator with one of the other two.
Does ModulawAI calculate child support?
Not as a maintained guideline engine, and that is deliberate. US child support follows state guidelines: 41 states use income shares, six use percentage of income and three use the Melson formula, each with its own worksheets, deviation factors and tax interactions. Specialist tools such as Family Law Software and DivorceMate maintain those formulas. ModulawAI handles the matter, the disclosure bundle, the research, the drafting, the deadlines and the billing around the calculation, and the resulting figures come back into the file as documents and schedules. Canvas, the interactive artifact builder, can also produce a working calculator from a formula you supply, which is useful for modelling a position in a meeting, but it is not a maintained guideline engine and carries no certification, so the number that goes on a filed worksheet should come from the dedicated product.
Can it complete Form E?
It can hold the disclosure checklist, read and organise the documents that support Form E, and draft the surrounding correspondence and statements in Word. It does not auto-complete the form itself, and no tool should be trusted to do that unsupervised, because the statement of truth is the fee earner’s.
How does it handle the disclosure bundle?
Tabular review treats the bundle as a document set: documents form the rows, your questions form the columns, and every cell is answered with a citation to the page it came from. It handles PDF and Word including scanned documents, and the completed grid exports to Excel or as a PDF report, which is usually the format the schedule of assets needs to be in anyway.
Is it suitable for legal aid work?
Time, disbursements and matter stages are all recorded against the matter and exportable, which covers the underlying record-keeping. ModulawAI does not currently generate jurisdiction-specific legal aid billing forms, which some dedicated systems do. Firms with heavy legal aid caseloads should test that specific requirement before switching.
How is it priced for a family practice?
Per seat with usage-based credits, covering practice management, research, drafting and review together rather than as separate subscriptions. See pricing.
