Generating Documents with AI

ModulawAI’s document generation is not a fill-in-the-blanks template engine. You describe what you need, the assistant drafts it, and you iterate until it is right. This guide covers how to get a good first draft and how to refine it.

What the assistant draws on

  • Your instructions — parties, jurisdiction, arguments, tone
  • Case context — if you are working inside a case, it knows the parties, the matter type and the documents in the file
  • Research from this conversation — authorities it found earlier get worked into the draft
  • The jurisdiction you have selected — which shapes the conventions it follows

What it can draft

TypeExample request
Written address“Draft a written address for the claimant arguing the defendant breached Clause 7 of the Distribution Agreement dated 15 March 2025.”
Legal opinion“Write a legal opinion on whether the plaintiff has locus standi to challenge the appointment of the receiver.”
Brief“Prepare a brief on the applicability of the doctrine of laches to the claimant’s equitable relief.”
Contract“Draft a non-disclosure agreement between TechFlow Ltd and its incoming Chief Technology Officer.”
Legal memo“Prepare a memo on the tax implications of transferring shares between related companies under CAMA.”
Formal letter“Draft a demand letter for unpaid rent of ₦2,500,000 under the Lagos Tenancy Law, giving 14 days’ notice.”
Report“Prepare a due diligence report on the target company’s intellectual property portfolio.”

These open in the Canvas. For a full walkthrough of the Canvas itself, see Artifacts: Documents the AI Builds for You.

Getting a good first draft

Step 1 — Say what you need, precisely

Include:

  • Parties — names and roles
  • Jurisdiction
  • The issue — what the document should argue, advise or agree
  • Key facts and terms — dates, amounts, clause references
  • Tone — formal, assertive, conciliatory or neutral

Example: “Draft a written address for the claimant in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/1234/2025 between Adelaja Holdings Ltd and Zenith Bank Plc. Argue that the defendant breached Clause 7 of the Facility Agreement dated 15 March 2025 by disbursing funds late. Jurisdiction: Nigeria. Tone: formal and assertive.”

Step 2 — Research before drafting

If the document makes legal arguments, ask for the authorities first:

“First, find Nigerian cases on breach of facility agreements and the measure of damages.”

Then ask for the draft. The assistant works the authorities it found into the arguments, so you get real citations rather than placeholders.

Step 3 — Refine it

What you wantWhat to say
Expand an argument“Expand the argument on Clause 7 and add more case law on consequential damages.”
Shorten a section“Condense the introduction to a single paragraph.”
Add a section“Add a prayer for costs and interest at 10% per annum.”
Change the tone“Make this more conciliatory — it is a pre-action letter, not a court filing.”
Insert a citation“Add Edewor v. Uwujare (2014) 6 NWLR (Pt. 1403) 434 to the argument on unjust enrichment.”
Restructure“Move the quantum section before the liability section.”

You can also edit directly in the Canvas — click anywhere and type.

Working inside a case

Generate a document while you are in a case and the assistant already has the parties, suit number and matter type, so you can simply say “draft a written address for the claimant” without repeating them.

The finished document does not file itself into the case. Use Save As → Note or Save As → Task and pick the case, or export it and upload it to the case Documents tab yourself.

Exporting

Use Save As → Document and choose a format:

FormatBest for
Microsoft Word (.docx)Further editing, track-changes review, colleagues
PDFFiling, clients, printing

What it cannot do

  • File anything. Export and file it yourself.
  • Verify facts you supply. Give it a date or an amount and it uses it as given.
  • Keep earlier versions. There is no draft history — export anything you might want back.
  • Replace your judgement. You remain responsible for the final document.
