We pulled Google search volume for Nigeria across roughly a hundred legal research and legal technology terms in September 2026. Demand concentrates almost entirely on primary law and on the established research brands. Statutes dominate: the 1999 Constitution at about 2,900 searches a month, the Evidence Act 2011 and CAMA 2020 at about 1,600 each, the Labour Act at 1,300, the Land Use Act at 880 and the Legal Practitioners Act at 720. Law reports follow, with the Nigerian Weekly Law Reports at roughly 3,600 across its variants. Software categories barely register: legal practice management software sits at around 20 searches a month and law firm software at around 10.

That tells you what the incumbents got right. A Nigerian legal research platform that indexes appellate judgments, the Laws of the Federation, state laws and court forms is answering the question the market is actually asking, and doing it before anyone was asking about AI. Any honest comparison has to start there rather than with a feature grid.

Where the argument for switching actually lies

Not in the archive, where the incumbents are strong and we say so on the comparison above. It lies in everything that happens after the search result appears. A research subscription does not open the matter, does not record the time you spent reading, does not draft the written address, does not track the adjourned date, does not raise the invoice in naira and does not tell the client what is happening. Nigerian practices largely do those things in Excel, WhatsApp and a shared drive, which is why the software category shows almost no search volume while the underlying need is universal.

There is also a cross-border dimension that a single-jurisdiction platform cannot serve. Nigerian courts continue to draw on English authority, and commercial work increasingly touches Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. The test to run on any AI legal tool, here as anywhere

Damien Charlotin’s AI Hallucination Cases database recorded 2,041 court decisions worldwide involving fabricated AI-generated content as at 14 September 2026, across more than 40 jurisdictions. In the United States Mata v Avianca produced a $5,000 sanction in 2023; in England the Divisional Court in Ayinde v London Borough of Haringey [2025] EWHC 1383 (Admin) made wasted costs orders and required self-reporting to regulators after five invented authorities were cited. The mechanism is always the same. Take a point you have already argued, run it through the tool, and open every authority it returns. A platform that cannot show you the judgment has failed the only test that matters, whatever its archive size.

Beyond retrieval: building a working tool for the file

A research subscription returns authority, which is a different job from the one described here, and no criticism of it. Even the global AI platforms stop at a more elaborate version of the same output: Harvey’s Agent Builder and Legora’s Workflows chain research, review and drafting into multi-step runs, and Harvey reported more than 25,000 customer built workflows by February 2026 (harvey.ai). Documents go in, and documents, tables and answers come out.

In a Nigerian practice that is a filing fee estimator for the division you appear in, a judgment debt interest calculator, a stamp duty model for a conveyancing file, a compliance checklist that a client fills in, an intake form in naira, or a small dashboard a partner will actually open. You describe it in ordinary words and get a page you can use, usually in minutes, with no code and no developer. The nearest equivalents are Claude Artifacts and ChatGPT Canvas, general assistants that know nothing about your matters or Nigerian law.

The limits belong in the same paragraph as the claim. Canvas apps run in a sealed sandbox with no network access at all, by design, so the app cannot reach the matter file, firm data or any outside service, and its figures are typed in by hand. Rates and fees come from you, not from a vendor who revises them when a practice direction changes, so the arithmetic is yours to verify. They are internal tools today, and publishing one to a public address for clients is on the roadmap rather than in the product.
