Alternatives

A Legora alternative that also runs the matter.

Legora is a well-regarded collaborative AI workspace for lawyers, with tabular review and a Word add-in, sold mainly to large firms. ModulawAI offers the same class of capability, grounded research, grid-based document review and drafting in Word, and adds what an AI workspace leaves out: the matters, deadlines, time, billing, client portal and CRM the firm actually runs on, with primary law for eight jurisdictions including four in Africa.

Deciding

Which one fits.

Stay with an AI workspace if

You are a large firm adding AI on top of settled systems.

A firm with an entrenched practice management system, a document management platform and a research subscription is buying a shared AI layer to sit across them. That is a coherent architecture, and an AI workspace suits it. The cost is that the AI does not see the matter, so output is moved by hand into the systems that do, and the firm pays for four subscriptions to get one workflow.

Choose ModulawAI if

You want the AI inside the system that holds the file.

For a practice of two to two hundred lawyers, the research should attach to the matter, the review grid should export into the file, the time should be captured against the client and the draft should be the document in the case. ModulawAI does all of that because it is the practice management system as well as the AI, priced per seat rather than by enterprise contract.

Coverage

If your work touches Africa, the choice makes itself.

Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan and South African primary law sit in the same query as US, UK, Canadian and EU authority. See legal software in Africa.

Market context

Where the money has gone, and what it means for a buyer.

Legora is one of the fastest-scaling companies in legal technology and it is worth being precise about that rather than dismissive. In March 2026 it raised a $550 million Series D led by Accel, roughly tripling its valuation from the previous October to $5.55 billion, with Benchmark, Bessemer, General Catalyst, Iconiq, Redpoint and Y Combinator participating. A $50 million extension followed in April 2026, taking the post-money valuation to about $5.6 billion and bringing in NVentures, Nvidia’s corporate venture arm, in what was reported as its first legal AI investment. Total funding stands at roughly $816 million, and by August 2026 the company was reported to be raising again at a valuation above $10 billion.

Its principal competitor has moved on the same curve. Harvey raised $200 million at an $11 billion valuation in March 2026 co-led by GIC and Sequoia, then $550 million at $15.5 billion in September 2026 co-led by Diffusion and Lightspeed, alongside the acquisition of the AI security company Guardrails AI. Between them these two companies have raised well over $2 billion.

Why a buyer should care about the funding round

Capital at that scale determines who a company builds for. A business valued in the billions on the strength of enterprise contracts optimises for the firms that sign them: the Am Law 100, the Magic Circle, large in-house teams. That produces genuinely strong products for those buyers, and it is why both companies invest heavily in security, benchmarks and agentic research. It also means the sales motion, the onboarding, the implementation requirements and the price are calibrated to organisations with a legal operations function and a procurement team.

A practice of two to two hundred lawyers is not that buyer. It needs the same research and review capability, but it also needs matters, deadlines, time, billing and a client portal, and it needs to buy them in one line without a six-month implementation. That is the position ModulawAI occupies, and it is a different position rather than a better one in the abstract. If you are a hundred-partner firm with iManage, Elite and a Westlaw contract, an AI layer is the right architecture and we would say so. If you are not, paying enterprise prices for a layer that cannot see your matters is an expensive way to get a chat window.

The capability neither product has: building working software

Legora Workflows and Harvey Agent Builder are the two strongest automation stories in the category, and it is worth being exact about what they automate. Both let a firm assemble a multi-step process in natural language. Legora chains drafting, tabular review, research and translation into a single agentic run. Harvey adds conditionals, classification and role based permissions, and reported more than 25,000 customer built workflows by February 2026 (harvey.ai). These are pipelines, and good ones. Documents go in, and documents, tables and answers come out.

What neither produces is a running application. ModulawAI includes Canvas, an interactive artifact builder that turns a plain description into working software. Describe a settlement calculator, a client intake form, a limitation period checker, a scenario model behind a costs estimate or a small internal dashboard, and you get a real page you can open and use, usually in a few minutes. The lawyer writes no code. The nearest equivalents are not legal products at all: Claude Artifacts and ChatGPT Canvas do this well, and neither knows your matters, your precedent library or the jurisdiction you practise in.

The limits matter as much as the capability. Canvas apps run in a sealed sandbox on an opaque origin with no network access at all, which is a deliberate security decision: the app cannot reach your matter file, your firm’s data or any outside service, so anything it needs is typed in. They are internal tools today. Publishing one to a public address for clients to use is on the roadmap and is not in the product. Read it as a way for a fee earner to get a bespoke tool in an afternoon rather than a quarter.

FAQ

Questions, addressed.

What is the best Legora alternative?

It depends on whether you want an AI workspace or a complete system. ModulawAI offers comparable grounded research, tabular review and Word drafting, and adds practice management, billing, a client portal and autonomous agents in the same platform, with coverage of eight jurisdictions including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. Large firms with settled systems that only want AI on top may prefer a workspace product.

Does ModulawAI have tabular review?

Yes. Documents form the rows, questions form the columns, every cell cites the passage it came from, and the grid exports to Excel or PDF. See AI contract review.

Is ModulawAI only for smaller firms?

No. It serves solo practitioners through to enterprise firms with departments, delegated authority and role-based permission policies. It does not require an enterprise contract to start.

How should we compare research quality?

Run a question you have already researched through each product and open every citation. Both approaches ground answers in retrieved sources; the test is whether you can verify each one in a click.

Can it connect to our existing systems?

Yes. There is a scoped REST API and an MCP server, so ModulawAI can be reached by other tools and by AI assistants the firm already uses.
